Workshop Information
Online Live Webinar: Real-Time, Interactive Training
It is estimated that fifty million Americans battle chronic pain (Dahlhamer, 2018). These individuals are four times more likely to experience anxiety and depression. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, these numbers are on the rise due to both work from home injuries and Long COVID. It is very likely that you already work with chronic pain clients or will work with them in the future.
Battling chronic pain takes a deep toll on mental health. Often, these folks can experience chronic invalidation from the medical system, their families and their peers in addition to the physical and emotional isolation that comes from chronic illness. Mental health treatment can have a strong positive effect, both in helping folks improve their mental health and in reducing the intensity of the physical pain they experience.
In this workshop, we will discuss the neurobiological relationship between physical pain and psychological sequelae, as well as understanding related disorders. We will identify related psychological disorders and provide an overview of evidence-based treatments to manage chronic pain. By the end of this workshop, you will have a strong foundation for treating client with chronic pain.

Presenter:
Eva Chiriboga, PsyD

Dr. Eva Chiriboga is a licensed clinical psychologist in Maryland, Virginia, and DC. She has been working with trauma since 2009, beginning with her work at Shepard Pratt Hospital on their Trauma Disorders unit. Since then, she got her Master’s in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Trauma Studies from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia PA, and her doctoral degree from Long Island University Post, a small school in Long Island that focused on providing treatment for underserved populations. In the course of her career, Dr. Chiriboga has worked with 9/11 first responders, gang members, sexual assault and domestic violence survivors, as well as military veterans. In the course of her work, she noticed the overlap between trauma and chronic pain. In order to deepen her understanding of the relationship between trauma and the body, she became a certified yoga teacher and sought training in mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and CBT for Chronic Pain. In her current practice, Dr. Chiriboga specializes in a combination of chronic pain, trauma and addiction.
Dr. Chiriboga is the owner of Sanctuary at the Spring, a telehealth psychology practice.
