Workshop Information

Emerging theories and models can provide insight into the identity development of LGBTQ+ people. This 2-hour session will take a deep dive into the LGBTQ+ experience, emerging research into gender and sexual orientation identity development, dominant models and theories for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) and Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) identity, and best practices for supporting someone as they “come out.”

Gregory A. Brightbill (pronouns: he/him/they) is the owner of Bright Baltimore, LLC, a training and consulting company located in Baltimore, Maryland, specializing in LGBTQ+ advocacy and allyship. In addition to his work at Bright Baltimore, Greg works full time at the University of Maryland, Baltimore as an Associate Director in Student Affairs where he supports the educational, professional, and identity-based needs of health and human services students pursuing graduate and professional degrees. Additionally, Greg serves as the Vice-Chair of the GLSEN Maryland Board of Directors, an education and advocacy organization specializing in the needs of k-12 Queer youth in the Maryland Schools. Greg’s education includes a Bachelor of Science in psychology, a Master of Education in college student personnel administration, and a Master of Business Administration. Furthermore, Greg is currently in the candidacy phase of his Doctorate of Education in Higher Education Leadership degree while he writes his dissertation titled: A Grounded Approach Campus Climate Model for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Students in Graduate and Professional Education.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After attending this course, participants will be able to…
 

  1. Differentiate between gender identity, sexual orientation, birth/assigned sex, and gender expression

  2. Recognize the identities within the transgender community and their individual/identity-based significance.

  3. Identify the basic models for transgender identity development, LGB identity development, and the
    coming out process

  4. Summarize gender identity development in early childhood and adolescence

  5. Recognize and practice using language for allyship and LGBTQ+ support

Maryland CEU Institute, #1816, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Maryland CEU Institute maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 05/04/2022 – 05/04/2023. Course Completion Requirements:

To earn CE Credit attendees must fulfill the following:

  1. Login to the training (Zoom) on time and ensure that you first and last name are showing in Zoom (message staff if unsure or need help).

  2. Complete a separate Virtual Sign-In Sheet by training start time (link provided in Zoom).

  3. Attend training in full and participate.

  4. Complete separate Virtual Sign-Out Sheet/Evaluation at conclusion (link provided in Zoom with 15 minute timeframe to begin or complete eval).

 

If all of the above criteria are met your CE certificate will be emailed to you within 7 days of training completion. If above criteria are not yet you may have credits deducted or may be unable to receive any credits. See Terms of Service for full details.
